Synopsis: The mining project’s concession and area of exploration overlaps with Wirikuta, a nationally designated sacred heritage site for the Wixarika (Huichol) people. The latter are opposed to mining within this territory. Local ejidos (rural communities) have also not been consulted and have voiced their opposition to mining on their lands. Parts of this area are also of exceptional biodiversity value. The national environmental agency (SEMARNAT) and its enforcement arms (PROFEPA) have declared to the press that such a project would be illegal but they have not as yet received permitting applications from the company (Jan. 2012).
