Synopsis: In 2005 community members attempted to stop the access of exploration crews in their area. Since then protests and blockades against mining have taken place with regularity. The company is alleged to have obtained an exploration permit without the consent of ejido and of now trying to acquire permission to begin exploitation. Opponents to the project and to open-pit mining more generally allege intimidation. A 2009 comuniqué details various instances of death threats and arbitrary detention. Permanent police and military harrassment is alleged. In 2009 the company announced it was suspending operations citing problems with community relations and a lack of financing.
