Mazamorras Project, Colombia
Peasant farmers of Berruecos in southwest Colombia are concerned about the social impacts of the mine, particularly the threat of conflicts and outright violence, as well as its impacts on the local watershed. A string of death threats and assaults have already been recorded against community organizers, even at this early stage in the project’s development. In October 2011, an altercation between farmers and representatives of the company’s community relations team led to the violent intervention of company security. This in turn set off a large protest of local farmers which resulted in the burning down of the company’s buildings.
