Description

The conflict between the Shuar of Zamora-Chinchipe and Kinross Gold dates to 2008 when the company acquired the concession from Aurelian Resources. Protests began in 2009 due to a change in the new mining law which would allow Kinross to operate in the area despite community opposition. In December 2011 President Correa gave the go ahead to the Kinross project. Water contamination and the denial of local sovereignty remain the protesters main concerns. Most public anger in the region remains directed towards fellow Canadian Corriente’s actions in the region.

Following disagreement with the Ecuadorian government over royalties, Kinross declared in June 2013 that it was pulling out of the project.
