El Cubo, Mexico
Synopsis: Labour conflict between Gammon Gold and Mexican miner’s union SNTMMSRM. In 2010 397 miners were locked out. The company decided to shut down its operations and subsequently launched legal actions against seven union leaders. The company alleges that union workers disrupted operations and evidenced ‘unacceptably low productivity”. Union leaders claim that Gammon sought to impose 10 hour work shifts which is illegal under Mexican labour law. The mine had also been investigated by authorities for cyanide filtering into local waters. The mine has since resumed operation.
