Crucitas, Costa Rica
Synopsis: The Crucitas mining project was suspended and resumed several times between the years 2002-2010. The project was met with a great deal of opposition from Costa Rican environmental groups concerned with the environmental impacts and risks posed by an open-pit mine. These include contamination of the San Juan River and deforestation of up to 300 hectares of habitat for the endangered Great Green Macaw. In November of 2010 the project was annuled by the Costa Rican court and the government.
